In India, National Sports Day is celebrated on the occasion of the birthday of Major Dhyan Chand Singh. Major Dhyan Chand Singh was a hockey player who earned a lot of fame for his hockey skills. He was also honoured by the titles “The Magician” and “Hockey Wizard” for his outstanding performances.

Major Dhyan Chand Singh was born on August 29, 1905, in Uttar Pradesh. He started his career with the British Indian Army. He devoted his time to hockey from 1926 to 1948. During this time, he played 185 matches and scored more than 400 goals. Due to his proficiency in hockey, India won the gold medal at the Olympics in 1928, 1932, and 1936.

After recognising his commendable achievements, the government decided in 2012 that his birthday would be celebrated as National Sports Day every year. Since then, it has been celebrated every year. Through this, they want to encourage the youth of our country to show their interest in sports and choose sports as a career option.
